The next slate of Marvel Cinematic Universe projects was announced at the D23 expo this weekend, and among them is a different kind of team-up movie which will consist of several former villains and anti-heroes from previous stories.

Sebastian Stan took to the stage to confirm that he will be reprising the role of Bucky Barnes a.k.a. the Winter Soldier in Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts, alongside a “good troubled bunch” of returning characters.

The lineup will include Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, the breakout character from 2021’s Black Widow who also appeared in the Hawkeye series on Disney+. Following the death of Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) in Avengers: Endgame, many fans have expected Yelena to assume the mantle of Black Widow in a future movie, and it looks like she might end up doing just that in Thunderbolts. Just like her sister before her, Yelena’s past as an assassin means she has plenty to atone for.

Another popular figure from Black Widow who will be joining the Thunderbolts is Yelena’s father figure, the Russian operative Red Guardian played by Stranger Things star David Harbour. Thunderbolts will also feature that movie’s antagonist, Taskmaster, played by Olga Kurylenko.

Wyatt Russell is coming back as John Walker, the guy who was given Captain America’s shield and started going by U.S. Agent in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, a gig which did not go all that well for him. We’re also going to see more of Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, the occasionally non-corporeal anti-heroine from Ant-Man and the Wasp.

Rounding out the cast is Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina, the shady character who has been popping up in key scenes over the last year; she recruited John Walker for reasons unknown, and is also currently Yelena’s boss. It is possible that Thunderbolts will show her in a Nick Fury-esque role, albeit a morally murkier one.
